PTC Web Desk: In a significant ruling, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has transferred the investigation of three First Information Reports (FIRs) related to security lapses involving Justice NS Shekhawat to the Haryana Police. This decision was made in light of concerns regarding impartiality, as the court deemed it necessary for an unbiased investigation.

IPS Manisha Chaudhary of Haryana has been appointed to lead the inquiry into the three FIRs filed in Punjab. The High Court emphasised the severity of negligence concerning the security of a sitting judge, asserting that such lapses must be addressed promptly and transparently.

The three FIRs stem from incidents that occurred between September 22 and September 26. The first FIR was lodged on September 22 in Amritsar regarding a security breach, while the second FIR was registered on September 23 at the Tallewal Police Station after Justice Shekhawat's vehicle was obstructed by farmers and a crowd in Barnala. The third FIR was filed on September 26 in Amritsar.

While the Punjab Government had initially formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by ADGP B Chandra Sekhar to handle these FIRs, the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s recent decision shifts the responsibility to Haryana's police force. Earlier, the court had already reassigned the security detail of Justice Shekhawat from Punjab Police personnel to the Haryana and Chandigarh Police.

To enhance the safety of Justice Shekhawat, additional security measures have been implemented, including the deployment of an escort vehicle and three armed security personnel.
