Punjab declares public holiday on December 6
PTC Web Desk: The Punjab Government has declared December 6 as a public holiday to commemorate the martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. On this day, schools, colleges, government offices, boards, corporations, and other institutions across the state will remain closed.
The announcement follows a similar declaration made earlier by the Chandigarh administration. Recognising the significance of this occasion, the Punjab Government has amended its holiday schedule to give due importance to the event.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Guru of Sikhism, is revered for his unparalleled courage, sacrifice, and steadfast commitment to upholding religious freedom. Born on April 1, 1621, in Amritsar to Guru Hargobind Ji and Mata Nanaki, he was initially named Tyag Mal. His valour and selflessness later earned him the title "Tegh Bahadur," meaning "brave wielder of the sword."
Throughout his life, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji dedicated himself to safeguarding humanity, opposing injustice, and protecting the right to religious freedom. During the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, when forced conversions and religious persecution became widespread, Guru Ji stood as a beacon of hope for the oppressed.
In 1675, Kashmiri Pandits sought his assistance, pleading for protection against forced conversions to Islam. Guru Ji championed their cause and courageously confronted Emperor Aurangzeb, ultimately sacrificing his life to uphold the principles of justice and freedom.
