Panchayat Elections: State Election Commission, Punjab has cancelled elections in 20 Panchayats in Gidderbaha following numerous complaints regarding widespread irregularities and illegalities in the nomination processes. The poll body will issue fresh election schedule for Block Gidderbaha, Sri Muktsar Sahib.

It has been pointed out, that candidates were wrongfully rejected even after their nomination papers were found to be correct upon scrutinising. Their nominations were rejected after being allotted a symbol in an illegal manner. It has also been claimed that the Returning Officers rejected the nominations of some candidates by issuing revised lists, despite the fact that these nominations were accepted in previously published lists.

It has been requested that all nomination papers for this Block be re-examined, the issue be investigated, and illegally rejected nomination papers be restored, allowing candidates to fight elections.

The commission also summoned District officials and Returning officials from the Block's 5 clusters for an inquiry into the incident.
