Chandigarh, November 14: In a major relief to Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the decision to grant regular parole to the dera head.

While hearing the case, the Punjab and Haryana High Court questioned the maintainability of this PIL and asked "how can a petition against a person be considered as a public interest litigation".

The High Court directed the Haryana Government to dispose of Advocate HC Arora's representation within a week.

Notably, a PIL seeking the cancellation of the 40-day regular parole granted to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim was filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court by Advocate HC Arora. The plea was filed against the state of Haryana and Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh while urging the HC to pass directions to YouTube and other platforms to delete videos uploaded by Gurmeet Ram Rahim.

In the plea, Arora had submitted that the regular parole to the dera chief was in violation of the provisions of the Haryana Good Conduct of Prisoners (Temporary Release) Act.

He had contended that through his online and virtual satsangs, Gurmeet Ram Rahim had been resorting to his usual practices and giving "mantras to female followers for getting blessed with a male child".
