From the brief yet impactful tenure of Sushma Swaraj to Sheila Dixit's transformative 15-year leadership and now Atishi's forthcoming role, these women have contributed uniquely to the city's progress.

Sushma Swaraj: Brief tenure with a lasting impact

Sushma Swaraj served as Delhi’s Chief Minister from October 12, 1998, to December 3, 1998, for a brief 52 days. Her tenure, though short, was notable for her strong leadership and decisive actions. Sushma Swaraj, who was a respected figure in Indian politics, was known for her exceptional oratory skills and her commitment to public service. Sushma Swaraj’s political career extended beyond her role as Delhi's Chief Minister. She served as the External Affairs Minister of India, where she was widely praised for her effective diplomacy and humanitarian efforts. Tragically, Swaraj passed away on August 6, 2019, at the age of 67. Her death was a significant loss to Indian politics, and she was remembered for her dedication, leadership, and compassion.

Sheila Dixit: A legacy of transformative governance

Her tenure is celebrated for its focus on urban development and modernisation. Sheila Dixit played a pivotal role in transforming Delhi into a modern metropolis through significant infrastructure projects, including the development of the Delhi Metro, improvement of roads, and the establishment of various public amenities.

Sheila Dixit's leadership also saw efforts in education and healthcare improvements. Under her administration, Delhi witnessed substantial growth in its public infrastructure and services. Her tenure is often associated with rapid urbanization and development in Delhi.

Sheila Dixit passed away on July 20, 2019, at the age of 81. Her death marked the end of a notable era in Delhi's political history. She was remembered for her extensive contributions to the city's growth and her unwavering commitment to public service.

Atishi: Delhi's new CM-designate

On September 17, 2024, Atishi was designated as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, succeeding Arvind Kejriwal. Atishi’s appointment marks a new chapter in Delhi’s political journey. A senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and current Delhi Minister, Atishi is known for her work in education reform and public administration.

Atishi currently holds significant portfolios in the Delhi Government, overseeing finance, planning, PWD, water, power, education, higher education, services, and publicity. Since joining AAP, she has played a pivotal role in shaping the party's policies and strategies. She was a key member of the manifesto drafting committee for the 2013 Assembly elections, helping to define the party's goals and vision.

Representing the Kalkaji Assembly constituency, Atishi has also been a leading voice on critical issues such as the Delhi water dispute with neighbouring states. She has taken charge of the party’s communication efforts and has been vocal in addressing day-to-day political challenges, often sparring with the BJP and the Lieutenant Governor.

Despite her excitement about her new role, Atishi also expressed sadness at Kejriwal’s resignation. “It’s a bittersweet moment as my elder brother, Arvind Kejriwal, steps down from the Chief Minister’s position. His resignation is unprecedented in the history of Indian democracy,” she remarked.
