Chandigarh mayor elections: Congress, AAP to jointly contest polls on Jan 18
Chandigarh mayor elections: In a significant move, the Congress and the Aam Admi Party will compete in the Chandigarh Mayoral elections together. According to Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal, both parties were discussing the matter, and it was decided that the AAP would run for Mayor, while the Congress would run for the other two positions.
"Lok Sabha elections are to come later; before that, the corporation elections have come. We have been discussing the same and it has been decided that AAP will contest for the post of mayor and Congress will contest for the post of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor. The result of this will be that our candidate from the INDIA bloc will be successful with a good majority," he stated.
"On national issues, we know there is agreement between Congress and the AAP. Meetings between different parties have resulted in a consensus. At this time, everyone has come together to safeguard democratic feelings," he added.
In the Chandigarh Mayor elections, 35 councillors will cast their votes.
The BJP currently has the votes of 14 councillors and one MP. The Aam Aadmi Party has 13 councillors, while Congress has 7.
Shiromani Akali Dal has one councillor.
A majority requires 18 votes, and the BJP has a maximum of 15 votes. However, if the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress join forces, they will receive a total of 20 votes.
The alliance comes even as the AAP and the Congress try to strike an alliance for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
