Lok Sabha Polls 2024 | In a major setback to Congress, renowned boxer Vijender Singh joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

After joining BJP,  Boxer Vijender Singh says, "I have joined BJP today for the development of the country and to serve the people..."


Career Highlights

  • As an amateur, Vijender Singh made history by winning a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, becoming India's first Olympic medalist in boxing.
  • He has also earned bronze medals at the 2009 World Championships and the 2010 Commonwealth Games, as well as silver medals at the 2006 and 2014 Commonwealth Games, all in the middleweight division

  • In June 2015, Vijender Singh transitioned to professional boxing, signing a multi-year agreement with Queensberry Promotions through IOS Sports and Entertainment
  • He has also been involved in philanthropic activities and has been a vocal advocate for various social causes.

Political Career

Indian boxer Vijender Singh's political journey began when he joined the Indian National Congress on the eve of the 2019 Indian general election. 

He contested the Lok Sabha elections from South Delhi constituency on a Congress ticket but was defeated by BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri.
