PTC Web Desk: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has solidified its position in Jalandhar Municipal Corporation by electing Vineet Dhir, councillor from Ward 62, as the city’s new mayor. The party garnered the support of 46 councillors, surpassing the majority mark needed to claim control over the civic body.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann confirmed the development on Twitter, announcing the party’s leadership appointments in the corporation. Balbir Singh Bittu, representing Ward 10, has been designated as the Senior Deputy Mayor, while Malkit Singh from Ward 38 has taken over as the Deputy Mayor.

AAP secures majority despite initial shortfall

Out of the 85 municipal wards, AAP had won 38 seats in the elections held on December 21. Falling short of the 43-seat majority, the party bolstered its position by gaining support from independent councillors and defectors from rival parties, including the Congress and BJP. With this backing, AAP’s tally rose to 46, ensuring its majority and control over Jalandhar's municipal corporation.

The election process saw stringent measures to maintain order. Media representatives and outsiders were restricted from entering the venue. Even councillors' close associates were denied access, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted voting process.

The oath-taking ceremony was led by Arun Sekhri, the recently appointed Divisional Commissioner of Jalandhar. The event, held at the city’s Red Cross Building, was attended by Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal.
