Neeraj Chopra wins Lausanne Diamond League Meet title with 89.08m throw
Lausanne (Switzerland), August 27: Neeraj Chopra scripted history as he clinched the javelin throw competition at the Lausanne Diamond League with a best throw of 89.08m on Friday. Chopra became the first Indian to win the prestigious Diamond League Meeting title with his best throw of the event in Lausanne. Neeraj has now qualified for the Diamond League Finals, which will be held on September 7 and 8 in Zurich, Switzerland. He has also qualified for the 2023 World Championships. On the day, Neeraj's throw sequence was 89.08m, 85.18m, he skipped the third attempt, and he fouled in the fourth. He also skipped his fifth try before throwing a spectacular 80.04m in his sixth and final attempt. Jakub Valejch of the Czech Republic finished second with a throw of 85.88m, while Curtis Thompson of the USA finished third with a throw of 83.72m. Neeraj suffered a groin injury in the finals of the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, where he won the silver medal, ending India's 19-year medal wait. Neeraj won the gold medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. Neeraj finished second in the prestigious event's Stockholm leg, one spot behind world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, with a national record throw of 89.94m, only 6cm short of the gold standard in the world of javelin throw.
