PTC News Desk: A woman resident doctor at Sion Hospital in Mumbai was allegedly assaulted by a drunk patient and his family on Sunday.
According to other resident doctors, the attack took place in the hospital around 3:30 a.m., while the doctor was on duty in the ward.
The patient and his family visited the hospital because he suffered facial injuries. While he was under treatment, the patient and his family began to abuse and threaten the doctor.
The patient and the 5-6 other drunk men accompanying him then physically assaulted the doctor. According to sources, the doctor was injured while trying to defend herself.
The incident follows a nationwide uproar over the treatment of women doctors, which began on August 9 when a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata was r@ped and murdered during her shift.
Dr Akshay More, head of the BMC's Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), stated, "This is an incident that occurred at 3:30 a.m. today when a patient and some of his relatives arrived at the hospital drunk and got into a fight with the woman resident doctor. It is a matter of tremendous concern that this is happening in Mumbai."
The patient and his family fled from the location after the assault. The doctor approached Mumbai police and gave her a statement at the Sion police station, and a FIR will be filed soon.
