PTC News Desk: Rumours of the desecration of a holy book reportedly sparked violence in nagpur leading to violent clashes triggered by demonstration by certain groups seeking removal of Aurangzeb tomb. Several vehicles were torched in large-scale arson and vandalism as two communities clashed in Nagpur prompting police officials to fire tear gas to disperse the crowd.
At least 30 police officials have also been injured in the violent clashes with administration imposing curfew banning large gatherings. As soon as the clashes broke out, rumours of desecration of holy book started to spread. Several youths from both the communities gathered on the streets and started pelting stones.
The Maharashtra Police's cyber wing has started an investigation into more than 100 social media accounts that allegedly fanned the flames.
Authorities have urged the citizens to not believe any kind of rumours that are being spread in view of the old videos that are being circulated.
An eyewitness from Hansapuri described the chaos caused by a masked group. "A team came here, their faces were hidden with scarves. They had sharp weapons, stickers, and bottles in their hands. They started the ruckus, vandalized shops, and pelted stones. They also torched vehicles," the eyewitness said.
