Uttarakhand bus accident: Death toll reaches 36 as bus falls into deep gorge in Almora

A passenger bus fell into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand's Almora. Several are feared dead in the accident which took place near Kupi in Ramnagar at the Pauri-Almora border.

Uttarakhand bus accident: A passenger bus fell into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand's Almora, killing at least 36 passengers and injuring several others. The accident took place near Kupi in Ramnagar at the Pauri-Almora border.

A team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has reached the bus accident site in Almora for relief work.

The number of casualties is likely to increase.

The bus was travelling from Garhwal to Kumaon when the tragedy occurred at Marchula.

Earlier, District magistrate Alok Kumar Pandey said that seven people have died so far, but the death toll could climb because there were around 40 people on board when the bus fell into a 200-meter-deep gorge.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami also acknowledged the incident and spoke to the Secretary, Disaster Management, Commissioner Kumaon Division and DM Almora over the phone. The CM gave instructions to speed up the rescue and relief work. Along with SDRF, the NDRF team has also reached the spot. 

Rescue and relief work has been started.
