The legend who waited for more than 20 years to avenge the death of those who were assassinated by the British administrator Michael O’Dwyer, Udham Singh was born as Sher Singh on December 26, 1899, in a small village called Sunam in Punjab, India.
Udham Singh's life took a dramatic turn following the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 when troops of the British Indian Army, under the command of Colonel Reginald Dyer, fired machine guns into a crowd of unarmed protesters and pilgrims who had gathered in Jallianwala Bagh in Punjab's Amritsar on the occasion of Baisakhi.
The tragic Jallianwala Bagh massacre left an indelible mark on Singh. The brutal repression and the subsequent British indifference towards the suffering of the Indian populace galvanised Singh's resolve to seek justice.
Singh's response to the massacre was not just in words but in action. He meticulously planned and executed the assassination of Michael O'Dwyer, the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, who was widely seen as complicit in the atrocities of Jallianwala Bagh.
On March 13, 1940, Singh's act of vengeance was carried out at a public meeting in London's Caxton Hall and was hanged to death on July 31, 1940, for killing Former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab Michael O'Dwyer to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
Since July 31, his death anniversary has been observed as a day to remember his sacrifice in the Indian independence movement and to honor his courage in seeking justice for the victims of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
He remains an important symbol of resistance against British colonial oppression and is remembered as a heroic figure in India's struggle for independence. His sacrifice continues to inspire generations of Indians who value freedom and justice.
