Srinagar tragedy: 6 dead, several missing as boat ferrying schoolchildren overturns in Jhelum river

Srinagar tragedy: In a harrowing incident , tragedy struck central Kashmir's Srinagar district on Tuesday morning as six dead, several missing after a boat ferrying schoolchildren from Gandbal to Batwara capsized in the Jhelum river. 

Muzaffar Zargar, the medical superintendent of Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital in Srinagar confirmed that four individuals have lost their lives following a boat capsizing in the Jhelum river, while others are currently receiving treatment.


Officials have reported the successful rescue of 12 children from the river, all of whom are presently undergoing medical treatment at the hospital.

The Srinagar Administration has launched a rescue operation in the area. A State Disaster Response Force team was also deployed.

"The boat crashed into a pillar midway through the river and overturned. We do not know why this bridge is still under-construction. It has been over 10 years since the work began," a local said.
