Kolkata doctor murder: The Supreme Court has taken up the r@pe-murder case of the Kolkata doctor, which has outraged the nation. A bench chaired by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will hear the case on Tuesday.
The Supreme Court's action comes in response to rising public pressure and allegations of mishandling by state officials. The case, which is currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation, has raised major concerns about the safety of medical professionals in India, particularly women, who are frequently left vulnerable in their place of work.
The victim, a trainee doctor at the state-run hospital, was found severely assaulted and murdered in the seminar hall. A civic volunteer stationed at the hospital has been arrested in connection with the incident.
However, the family of the victim and protestors claim that the crime was a gang rape and demand a thorough investigation to bring all perpetrators to justice.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA), the country's largest doctor's organisation, has taken the lead in demanding justice for the deceased doctor. On Saturday, the IMA declared a statewide strike, halting all non-essential medical services for 24 hours.
