Yog guru Ramdev issues apology to Supreme Court in misleading advertisements case
PTC News Desk: On Tuesday, Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev took a significant step by issuing an unconditional apology to the esteemed Supreme Court, acknowledging his failure to comply with its orders in the case concerning misleading advertisements. This development unfolded as Baba Ramdev, alongside Patanjali Ayurved's managing director Acharya Balkrishna, presented themselves before the Supreme Court.
Their appearance came shortly after the court had issued show cause notices, prompting them to explain why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them. The apex court's summoning of Ramdev and Balkrishna stemmed from its dissatisfaction with Patanjali's lack of response to an earlier notice related to the case.
On March 19, the Supreme Court had specifically directed the duo to appear before it. The court expressed its disapproval of Patanjali's advertisements, noting that they contradicted the assurances provided to the court on November 21, 2023. These advertisements were deemed to bear the endorsement of Baba Ramdev himself, hence necessitating his appearance before the court.
Ramdev's legal representative humbly requested the court to acknowledge his client's presence and his sincere apology. The Supreme Court, while accepting the apology, reminded Baba Ramdev of the commitment made by his company to the court. The court admonished him for what it saw as a blatant disregard for its directives, stating that respect for court orders is imperative not only for the Supreme Court but for all judicial authorities across the nation.

Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. had previously assured the Supreme Court that it would uphold the law, especially regarding advertising and branding practices. The company pledged that it would refrain from making any statements implying medicinal efficacy or disparaging any medical system. However, the court's current proceedings were part of a broader context, with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) raising concerns about Baba Ramdev's alleged smear campaign against the Covid vaccination drive and modern medicine.
In summary, Baba Ramdev's apology before the Supreme Court marks a significant moment in the ongoing legal saga surrounding Patanjali's advertising practices. It underscores the importance of adhering to legal obligations and respecting judicial authority in matters of public concern.
