Rajiv Gandhi birth anniversary: Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Robert Vadra and Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge paid floral tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 79th birth anniversary at 'Veer Bhumi' in the national capital on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, party leaders and workers paid respect to Rajiv Gandhi outside Veer Bhumi.

On Sunday, a day after riding a motorcycle from Leh to Pangong Tso in Ladakh, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to his father from the banks of the lake.

"Papa, the dreams you had for India are shown from these priceless memories. Your mark is my way - understanding the struggles and dreams of every Indian, listening to the voice of Mother India," he said.

Rahul Gandhi is currently on a trip to Ladakh, his first since the region was separated off of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019 and is expected to visit Kargil next week.

A prayer meeting is being conducted today on the banks of Pangong Lake to commemorate former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's 79th birth anniversary.

Following the assassination of his mother, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi took leadership of the Congress in 1984.

When he took office in October 1984, he was 40 years old, making him India's youngest Prime Minister.

He was India's Prime Minister until December 2, 1989.

Rajiv Gandhi, born on August 20, 1944, was assassinated on May 21, 1991, during an election. rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber.
