Rising water levels and flooding impact in Patiala city
Flood situation persists in Patiala city with increased water levels in various areas. Fast water flow observed, causing flooding on roads and entering houses.
Weather Highlights: Two breaches have occurred in the Dhussi Dam located in the Lohian area of Shahkot sub-division in Jalandhar, Punjab, along the Sutlej River. Large cracks have emerged in the dam, resulting in water entering nearby villages. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been conducting rescue operations since late night to assist affected residents.
This is not the first time the dam has been breached. In 2019, the Dhussi Dam suffered a similar breakage during the floods in Lohian. The recent breach has occurred in the same vicinity. Beyond Lohian, there is an old railway bridge at Giddarpindi, and it is believed that the high level of sand near it contributes to the rise in water levels during the dam's release.
During a meeting in Chandigarh regarding flood preparedness, Member of Parliament Balbir Singh Seechewal had highlighted concerns about sand extraction near the area. However, sand extraction could not be carried out, leading to the current situation.
