PM Narendra Modi highlights impact of conflicts on Global South at East Asia Summit

PTC News Desk: During the East Asia Summit held in Vietnam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the detrimental impact of ongoing global conflicts on the Global South. He advocated for a rule-based framework in the Indo-Pacific region and stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in international waters.

In his address on Friday, PM Modi remarked, “The conflicts occurring in various parts of the world are adversely affecting the countries of the Global South. It is imperative that peace and stability be restored in regions such as Eurasia and West Asia as soon as possible. Coming from the land of Buddha, I firmly believe that this is not the era of war. Solutions to our problems cannot be found on the battlefield. It is crucial to uphold sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international laws. A humanitarian approach must guide our actions, prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy. As part of our responsibility as Vishwa Bandhu, India will continue to contribute in every possible way toward these goals.”

In his speech, PM Modi underscored the importance of maritime activities being conducted under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). He stated, “It is essential to ensure freedom of navigation and airspace in the region.”

The Prime Minister highlighted that peace, security, and stability in the South China Sea are vital for the broader Indo-Pacific region. He asserted, “A free, open, inclusive, prosperous, and rule-based Indo-Pacific is crucial for the progress of the entire region.”

PM Modi addressed the serious challenge posed by terrorism to global peace and security, stating, “Terrorism is a significant threat that must be confronted. To combat this menace, nations that value humanity must collaborate. Additionally, mutual cooperation in the realms of cyber, maritime, and space security must be enhanced.”

He reiterated the need to respect national sovereignty, uphold territorial integrity, and prioritize diplomatic dialogue as essential steps in addressing international conflicts.

On the sidelines of the East Asia Summit, Prime Minister Modi also met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. During their meeting, Modi extended his condolences regarding the tragic loss of at least 14 lives in the U.S. due to Hurricane Milton, which struck the country earlier in the week.

PM Modi is currently on a two-day visit to Laos, where he participated in the 21st ASEAN-India Summit the previous day. His engagements at the summit and bilateral discussions underscore India's commitment to strengthening ties with nations in the East Asia region and promoting peace and stability through cooperative efforts.

Through his remarks at the East Asia Summit, PM Modi has reiterated India's role as a proactive participant in international diplomacy, focusing on humanitarian solutions to global conflicts while advocating for a collaborative approach to regional security and economic development.
