PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated iconic Z-Morh Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district on Monday.
This was PM Modi's first visit to the Union Territory after assembly elections were held last year. On his visit, he was accompanied by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union Territory's Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, among other leaders.
On the inauguration of the tunnel, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, it will enable the development of Sonamarg resort in Ganderbal district as a winter sports destination, similar to the famous Gulmarg skiing resort town.
It comprises of the Sonamarg main tunnel of 6.4 km in length, an egress tunnel and approach roads. Situated at an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level, it will enhance all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg enroute to Leh, bypassing landslide and avalanche routes and ensuring safer and uninterrupted access to the strategically critical Ladakh region.
The inauguration is a major boost in tourism as the tunnel will transform Sonamarg into a year-round destination, boosting winter tourism, adventure sports, and local livelihoods.
Earlier on Sunday, security was intensified in the Valley and area domination exercises were carried out in Kashmir ahead of PM Modi's visit.
