New Year’s Eve: Chandigarh Police earmark vehicle-free zones for peaceful celebrations

Nakas to check drunken driving to be set up at various places; traffic rule violators to face action

New Year's Eve: The Chandigarh Traffic Police, in order to ensure safety and security of the general public as well as peaceful New Year 2023 celebrations, have earmarked vehicle-free zones from 10 pm of December 31, 2022, till 2 am on January 1, 2023. 

The zones that have been declared vehicle-free are inner market road of Sector 7, inner market road of Sector 8; inner market road of Sector 9; inner market road of Sector 10 (small chowk up to end of market Sector 10; inner roads of Sector 17; road in front of museum and art gallery, Sector 10 and from Aroma Light Point to Small Chowk near dispensary.

Residents whose houses are situated on the aforesaid routes are requested to carry a valid identity card and residence proof in order to facilitate their movement. Further, traffic will be regulated in a one-way system around Elante Mall, Industrial Area, Phase 1.



The Chandigarh Traffic Police have advised the general public to park their vehicles in designated parking lots only and avoid parking vehicles on footpaths/cycle tracks and main roads.

The Chandigarh Traffic Police will also be conducting a special drive against traffic violations in the city on the eve of New Year 2023. Strict legal action will be taken against the violators and their driving licences may be suspended. 

Those drinking liquor at public places, creating noise pollution through exhaust of vehicles and indulging in hooliganism shall be dealt with strictly. Special drunken driving nakas will be set up at various places and surprise checks would be conducted.

Chandigarh Police personnel will be regulating traffic and assisting the general public. The police  have sought the cooperation of the general public.
