Manipur ethnic violence: Curfew relaxed in twin Imphal districts of Manipur
PTC Web Desk: The curfew in Imphal East and West districts of Manipur was eased on Monday, allowing the public to move freely from 5 am to noon.
The district magistrates' offices issued separate statements stating that the restriction of movement from residences had been lifted during this period. The purpose behind this decision is to enable the general public to purchase essential items such as medicines and food items.
Following a tragic incident where three persons, including a man and his son, were killed in their sleep and their bodies were slashed with swords by militants in Bishnupur district, the curfew relaxation was shortened. On Saturday, the curfew was in effect only from 5 am to 10:30 am to ensure public safety and prevent further violence.
Before the incident in Bishnupur district, the curfew relaxation period in twin Imphal districts was from 5 am to 6 pm. However, in the wake of the tragic event, there was no relaxation of the curfew on Sunday.
Notably, the implementation of the curfew and its restriction in the region from 5 am to 10:30 am on Saturday, and the absence of curfew relaxation on Sunday, can be attributed to the ongoing ethnic clashes between the Kukis and Meiteis in Manipur.
These clashes started on May 3 and have persisted for the last three months, with over 160 persons losing their lives. The authorities are resorting to these measures to ensure security and stability in the area and prevent further escalation of violence and loss of lives.
