PTC News Desk: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has been charged with outraging a woman's modesty after posting something on social media about National Commission for Women chief Rekha Sharma.

The Delhi Police's special cell filed a First Information Report on Sunday under Section 79 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult woman's modesty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the new criminal code that replaced the Indian Penal Code, in response to a complaint made by Sharma.

In a letter, Sharma also asked Speaker Om Birla of the Lok Sabha to take "appropriate action" against Moitra.

Mahua Moitra made the remark on Thursday in response to videos of the women's commission chief meeting with women injured in the Hathras stampede.

The videos showed someone holding an umbrella for Sharma, and Moitra made a "pajamas" reference in a post on X, which sparked a backlash. She later deleted the post, and the police have inquired about it with the social media giant.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) took note of the remark on Friday and filed a complaint against Moitra, but the Trinamool MP remained combative.

In response to the NCW's post on X, she tagged the Delhi Police and asked them to take immediate action and arrest her, even mentioning that she was in West Bengal's Nadia.

"Come on @DelhiPolice please take action immediately on these suo moto orders. Am in Nadia in case you need me in the next 3 days to make a quick arrest," Moitra wrote, ending with an "I Can Hold My Own Umbrella" dig against Sharma at the end.
