PTC Web Desk: The Mahayuti government in Maharashtra launched the Mukhymantri Majhi Ladki Behin Yojana on June 28, 2014, aiming to economically empower women and strengthen their position within their families. The scheme provides Rs 15,000 monthly to eligible women in the 21-65 age group. Since its inception, the initiative has garnered significant traction, with more than 2.5 crore women applying for benefits.

Despite the programme’s success, it has faced criticism over financial sustainability. Opponents have questioned whether the government could sustain such a substantial initiative amid budget constraints. In response, the government allocated Rs 46,000 crore specifically for the scheme, addressing these concerns and reinforcing its commitment to supporting women.

The initiative has transformed lives across Maharashtra, enabling women to pursue education and entrepreneurship. For instance, one housewife used her scheme allowance to launch a clothing business, doubling her initial investment from Rs 7,500 to Rs. 15,000. Another beneficiary bought an iron and started her own seamstress business, illustrating how the scheme fosters financial independence and contributes to household income.

A woman shared her success story: "I have my own Aditya Cloth Centre... I use some of my money and whatever money I get from the scheme." Her efforts led to doubling her investment, showcasing the programme's positive economic impact.
