Maha Kumbh 2025: Can Second Shahi Snan on Mauni Amavasya free one from sins, cycle of life and death?
Term 'Mauni' derives from the word 'mauna', meaning silence, and devotees traditionally observe a vow of silence on this day
PTC Web Desk: As the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya approaches on January 29, millions of devotees from across the country and beyond are preparing to converge at the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj. Known as one of the holiest days in the Hindu calendar, Mauni Amavasya holds profound spiritual significance, particularly during the Kumbh Mela, making it a highly anticipated event for pilgrims and spiritual seekers alike.
The term "Mauni" derives from the word "mauna," meaning silence, and devotees traditionally observe a vow of silence on this day. This practice symbolises self-discipline and introspection, helping individuals connect with their inner self and the divine. According to ancient Hindu scriptures, Mauni Amavasya is considered the day when the sacred river Ganges is imbued with the nectar of immortality (amrit), making a holy dip especially potent for spiritual cleansing and liberation from sins.
The primary highlight of Mauni Amavasya is the second Shahi Snan (royal bath), where revered saints, seers, and akharas (religious sects) lead a ceremonial procession to take the first dip at the Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. Following the akharas, millions of devotees will participate in the ritual bathing, with the belief that it purifies the soul and brings them closer to moksha, or liberation.
Religious leaders emphasise the transformative power of this day. "Mauni Amavasya is a time to silence the noise within and surrender to the divine energy of the universe. The sacred waters of the Ganga on this day are believed to wash away karmic impurities, making it a rare and powerful opportunity for spiritual renewal," said a prominent spiritual leader attending the Maha Kumbh.
The Prayagraj administration is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a smooth experience for the massive crowds expected to gather. Special arrangements have been made for crowd management, safety, and sanitation, with medical and emergency services on high alert.
Mauni Amavasya marks a spiritual pinnacle in the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13 with Paush Purnima. For devotees, this day offers a chance not only to cleanse their sins but also to engage in profound introspection, silence, and connection with the divine.
As anticipation builds, the chants of "Har Har Gange" echo through the air, setting the stage for this deeply significant day that embodies faith, devotion, and spiritual transformation.
