PTC News Desk: Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been sworn in as 51st Chief Justice of India succeeding Justice DY Chandrachud. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to Justice Khanna at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.


Ever since he has been elevated as a Supreme Court judge, he has been part of several benches that heard one of the most politically significant and contentious matters. With holding the baton of position, CJI Khanna 's tenure will be nothing short of overly engaging.

Arvind Kejriwal Bail (July 2024): Former Delhi CM was granted bail as he was involved in a liquor excise case

EVM-VVPAT Cross Verification(April 2024): All the petitions concerning the use of EVMs in Lok Sabha were rejected

Electoral Bonds (January 2024): Justice Khanna being part of the bench struck down the Union government's electoral bond scheme claiming it as unconstitutional.

Abrogation of Article 370 (August 2023): One of the most controversial matters, Justice Khanna played a significant role in the bench that revoked Article 370 granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir


Judgments that are likely to be heard


Minority Status of AMU

Supreme Court had last week overruled its 1967 verdict stating that AMU is entitled to minority status and it cannot be taken away only because it is a central university. CJI Sanjiv Khanna leading the bench is most likely to hear the matter.


Marital Rape

The Supreme Court in October this year deferred hearing a batch of pleas seeking criminalisation of marital rape, with CJI Chandrachud citing his retirement -- November 10, 2024.
