ISRO shares first video of Chandrayaan-3 rover's lunar expedition| Watch
New Delhi, August 25: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday released an image of the Chandrayaan-3 rover, named Pragyan, making its way across the lunar surface. ISRO shared a video on Twitter, depicting the rover's descent from the lander to the moon's terrain.
Chandrayaan-3 achieved a successful soft landing on the moon, marking India as the fourth country to accomplish this feat. The landing took place on Wednesday evening. ISRO acknowledged the challenges posed by the lunar environment, particularly lunar dust and extreme temperatures, which could affect the rover's moving components.
This endeavor marked India's third try at landing a spacecraft on the moon. The preceding attempt, Chandrayaan-2, experienced a setback when its lander crashed in September 2019, resulting in a partial failure.
Chandrayaan-3's achievement holds significance as it stands as the first spacecraft to achieve a gentle landing in proximity to the moon's South Pole. Unlike past missions, which mainly targeted the equatorial region, the south pole offers a rugged landscape with craters and deep crevices.
The insights gathered from the Chandrayaan-3 mission have the potential to enhance our understanding of lunar water ice, a valuable resource on the moon. This success could pave the way for further advancements in lunar exploration and utilization.
