India to witness warmer November amid intensifying El Nino conditions: IMD

PTC News Desk: The IMD forecasted above-normal minimum temperatures in most parts of India in November, with the exception of some areas in the northwest and west-central regions, due to strengthening El Nino conditions.

Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), said at a press conference here that rainfall across the country in November is most likely to be normal - 77-123 percent of the long-period average.

Over the southernmost parts of peninsular India, most of northwest India, and many parts of east-central, east, and northeast India, he predicts above-normal rainfall.

The Equatorial Pacific Ocean is experiencing EI Nino conditions, while the Indian Ocean is experiencing positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions. According to the IMD, the latest global forecasts show that El Nino conditions will likely persist across the season, while positive IOD conditions will likely weaken in the coming months.

Mohapatra, on the other hand, believes that El Nino conditions are unlikely to persist into the next monsoon season.

El Nino conditions (warming of Pacific Ocean waters near South America) are associated with weaker monsoon winds and drier conditions in India.
