Independence Day 2024: As we celebrate India's Independence Day each year, we are reminded of the countless sacrifices and monumental moments that shaped our nation's history. While many iconic images of this day are etched in our collective memory, there exists a treasure trove of rare and unseen photographs that offer a unique glimpse into the events and emotions surrounding India's journey to freedom.

A tribal raid from north-western Pakistan led Maharaja Hari Singh to seek India's help, resulting in the region's accession to India. This event triggered the first of two wars between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, ending in a 1948 UN-brokered ceasefire.

The end of British rule in August 1947 led to Partition, creating India and Pakistan, and resulted in violence that left up to 1 million dead as Hindus and Muslims clashed. 



FILE PIC:  In this August 15, 1948, photo, an armed Gurkha stands guard over thousands of Indians celebrating the first anniversary of India's independence at the Red Fort, New Delhi. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru addressed the crowd and hoisted the Dominion flag. The end of British colonial rule in August 1947 left India and the newly created Pakistan divided.
