Passenger held with Rs 21 lakh gold concealed with rhodium coating at Hyderabad airport
The gold was hidden within a rhodium-coated hair clip, along with additional jewelry such as 22 karat and 18 karat rings and bangles, all discovered in the passenger's luggage
Hyderabad, August 22: Hyderabad airport's customs officials recently intercepted a passenger arriving from Sharjah via an IndiGo flight, recovering approximately 370 grams of gold valued at over Rs 20 lakh. The gold was ingeniously concealed within items coated with rhodium, including a hair clip, rings, and bangles of 22 karat and 18 karat found in the passenger's luggage.
The Hyderabad GST & Customs Zone's Twitter handle shared a video of the seizure, captioning it with, ''Based on passenger profiling and effective surveillance, @hydcus officers at RGIA intercepted a passenger arriving from Sharjah via Indigo flight 6E 1422 on 21.8.23 and seized #gold weighing 397 gm valued at Rs 20.59 lakh.''
Another tweet by CGST highlighted, ''The gold was concealed as Rhodium-coated hair clip and other jewellery like rings, bangles of 22kt, 18kt were found in the baggage. Further investigation into the matter is under process.''
Rhodium plating involves the application of a thin layer of rhodium to jewelry pieces, acting as a protective shield against tarnishing. It enhances the jewelry's resistance to scratches and imparts a sophisticated, reflective white finish. This technique is commonly employed with white gold jewelry.
The authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter.
