PTC News Desk: The weather department has raised a red alert for heavy to very heavy snowfall and rain, coupled with thunderstorms, at isolated locations across several districts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday. This alert, upgraded from orange, underscores the potential for significant weather disturbances.

The forecast predicts heavy to very heavy rain or snowfall at isolated places within districts including Chamba, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahaul and Spiti, Mandi, and Shimla. According to meteorological projections, rain is expected across most plains and low hills, while snowfall or rain is anticipated in most mid and high-altitude regions.

The anticipated heavy precipitation raises concerns about disruptions to essential services such as water, electricity, and communication networks. Additionally, decreased visibility is likely, further complicating travel conditions. In light of these forecasts, authorities have urged residents to take adequate safety precautions.

Already, snowfall has commenced in areas like Manali and parts of Lahaul. Consequently, the Manali administration has halted traffic movement beyond the city limits. The heavy snowfall has enveloped Manali and the Lahaul region in a cold wave, exacerbating travel challenges.

KD Sharma, DSP of Manali, reported that due to daytime snowfall in Manali and Lahaul, vehicular movement beyond Manali towards Lahaul on the Manali-Leh highway had been suspended after 2 pm. Exceptions were made for emergency 4x4 vehicles. Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul and Spiti, Rahul Kumar, emphasised the risky road conditions due to fresh snowfall in the region, advising against unnecessary travel until roads are cleared.

Despite these challenges, water and power supplies remain normal in Lahaul and Spiti. Authorities urge strict adherence to safety instructions to mitigate the risk of any untoward incidents amidst the inclement weather.
