PTC News Desk: Devprakash Madhukar, the main accused in the July 2 Hathras stampede that killed 121 people, has surrendered, his lawyer claimed. According to his lawyer, Uttar Pradesh Police has taken him into custody after he surrendered in Delhi.

Madhukar, the 'mukhya sevadar' of the 'satsang' where the stampede took place, is the only person named in an FIR filed at the Sikandra Rao police station in Hathras in connection with the incident.

A P Singh, Madhukar's lawyer, said in a video message that his client had surrendered in Delhi while seeking treatment. He added that they would not apply for anticipatory bail since they had done no wrong.

"Today, we have surrendered Devprakash Madhukar, who was called the main organiser in the FIR in the Hathras case, after calling the police, the SIT and the STF in Delhi since he was undergoing treatment here," said Singh.

"We had promised that we wouldn't apply for anticipatory bail because we had done nothing wrong. What's our crime? He is an engineer and a heart patient. Doctors say his condition is currently stable, so we surrendered today to help with the investigation," the lawyer said.

Singh stated the police may now record or question his statement, but they must consider his health and ensure "nothing wrong happens to him."
