PTC News Desk: A major emergency was declared on a runway at Kolkata airport after the engine of an IndiGo flight heading for Bengaluru failed mid-air on Friday. However, both runways were later cleared, and the aircraft safely landed. The passengers and staff on board were unharmed.

According to The Times of India, a passenger reported seeing fire in one of the engines, but neither the airline nor airport officials confirmed this.

"All 173 on board, including the crew, are safe," an official stated.

According to The Times of India, a passenger said that shortly after take-off, he heard an unusual noise and witnessed flames shooting from one of the engines before the plane returned to Kolkata.

According to an airport official, the pilot of the plane 6E 0573 reported an emergency engine failure mere minutes after takeoff, resulting in a full emergency declaration at 10:39 p.m. The runway was swiftly inspected and made available to the pilot, allowing the aircraft to land in any direction.

At 11:05 p.m., the plane safely landed using a single engine. "An engine failure is a severe emergency. However, it is not unusual. Fortunately, the flight landed safely," an official was quoted saying.
