Doctor shot dead at Delhi hospital by 2 men amid demands for safety of doctors

A 55-year-old doctor was shot dead at a private nursing home in Delhi's Jaitpur Wednesday night. The incident takes place less than 2 months after the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

PTC News Desk: A 55-year-old doctor was shot dead at a private nursing home in Delhi's Jaitpur Wednesday night. The incident takes place less than 2 months after the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The doctor who died was identified as Javed Akhtar.

According to the staff at Nima Hospital, two men arrived late at night. One of them sought a change of bandage for his injured toe. The man had been treated in the hospital the previous night. After the dressing was completed, the men asked for a prescription and headed to the cabin of Dr. Javed Akhtar, a practitioner of Unani Medicine.

Minutes later, staff nurses Gajala Parveen and Md Kamil heard a gunshot. They hurried to the doctor's cabin and found him bleeding from the head.

The hospital staff has informed authorities that the suspects could be 16 or 17 years old.

Police said it appeared to be a targeted killing, and the assailants' visit the night before could have been a recce.

Police are currently going through CCTV footage from inside the hospital to identify the suspects.
