Cyclone Fengal approaches Tamil Nadu; heavy rainfall alert issued, schools colleges shut
In the wake of alert, a holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu's Trichy, Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Thiruvallur districts due to rain.
PTC News Desk: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh over deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal which is all set to accelarate resulting in heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on November 27.
In the wake of alert, a holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu's Trichy, Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Thiruvallur districts due to rain.
According to IMD, deep depression is currently moving towards Tamil Nadu located approximately 670 km off the coast of Chennai which is expected to transition into Cyclone Fengal. With the expected arrival of cyclone, southern states are likely to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.
“It is very likely to continue to move north-northwestwards and intensify further into a cyclonic storm on 27th November. Thereafter, it will continue to move north-northwestwards towards Tamil Nadu coast skirting Sri Lanka coast during subsequent 2 days,” IMD said on X.
Owing to the cyclone situation Tamil Nadu chief minister summoned a high level meeting with the District Magistrates of Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Villupuram to discuss the rescue and relief of people living in the affected areas.
"As a heavy rain warning has been issued, I have held a review meeting with the District Collectors of Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Cuddalore to be ready and to instruct the Ministers to work from the field. The government is ready to face the rain. I request the public to be safe while going out," Stalin said on X.
