Covid far from over, need to monitor situation across country: PM Modi in key meeting
New Delhi, March 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting to assess the Covid-19 and influenza situation in the country. The meeting comes in the backdrop of an increase in cases of influenza and Covid-19 in the past two weeks.
The Prime Minister further directed officials to enhance the Whole Genome Sequencing of Positive Samples with the designated INSACOG Genome Sequencing Laboratories. This will support tracking of newer variants, if any, and timely response, the Prime Minister's Office said on Wednesday.
He also emphasized Covid-appropriate behaviour including wearing masks on hospital premises by patients, health professionals and health workers. PM Modi also stressed that wearing masks is advisable when senior citizens and those with co-morbidities visit crowded areas.
According to PMO, the PM also directed that effective monitoring of IRI/SARI cases, and testing for Influenza, SARS-CoV-2 and Adenovirus be followed up with States. Further, he stressed the need to ensure the availability of required Drugs and Logistics for Influenza and Covid-19 across Health Facilities along with the availability of sufficient beds and health human resources.
He emphasised that the Covid-19 pandemic is far from over and that there is a need to constantly monitor the situation across the country. Prime Minister urged to continue focusing on a 5-fold plan of Test-Track-Treat-Vaccination and Covid Appropriate Behaviour, increase Lab Surveillance & testing of all Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases. Mock drills should be done regularly to guarantee that our hospitals are prepared for any emergency.
