Covid-19 update: India reported 756 fresh cases of Covid-19, the health ministry said on Sunday. With this, the number of active cases of the infection stood at 4,049.

According to data from the ministry updated at 8 a.m., five deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, two each from Kerala and Maharashtra, and one from Jammu and Kashmir.

The number of daily cases had dropped into the double digits until December 5, 2023, when it began to rise again due to the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions.

According to official sources, the maximum increase in single-day cases after December 5 was reported on December 31, 2023, when 841 cases were reported.

The vast majority of active cases (roughly 92% of all active cases) are recovering at home.

"The currently available data suggests that the JN.1 variant is neither leading to an exponential rise in the new cases nor a surge in hospitalisation and mortality," according to the sources.

In the past, India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the Delta wave in April-June 2021 seeing the highest number of daily new cases and deaths. On May 7, 2021, there were 4,14,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths reported.

More than 4.5 crore people have been infected and over 5.3 lakh have died since the pandemic began in early 2020.

According to the ministry's website, over 4.4 crore people have recovered from the disease, with a national recovery rate of 98.81 percent.

According to the ministry, the country has received 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines.
