Chandigarh, January 8: Following its coldest day of the season on Sunday, Chandigarh residents woke up to another morning enveloped in dense fog on Monday, with the night temperature holding steady at 7.4 degrees Celsius, resembling the weather conditions of Sunday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, warning residents about the likelihood of very dense fog in isolated areas and the continuation of severe cold day conditions at a few locations. An orange alert signifies the second-highest level of the four-tier alerts issued by the IMD. Under this alert, residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepared.

IMD officials reported that visibility ranged between 150 to 170 meters from the early hours on Monday until 8:30 am, improving to 700 meters by 11 am.

Relief from the persistent fog is anticipated from January 9 onwards due to an approaching fresh western disturbance, which is expected to bring drizzle and light rainfall. Although this might provide temporary relief for a duration of two to three days, moderate fog is forecasted to linger.

On Sunday night, Chandigarh recorded a minimum temperature of 7.4 degrees Celsius, while Mohali registered 7.8 degrees and Panchkula recorded 7.2 degrees Celsius.
