Chandigarh hosts roundtable to champion LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusivity

PTC Web Desk: A pivotal roundtable conference on “Advocacy, Rights, and Reforms with the LGBTQIA Community for an Inclusive World” was held in Chandigarh. The event, supported by the British Deputy High Commission, Chandigarh, and organised by Rubaroo, a Hyderabad-based NGO championing social inclusion, brought together a diverse panel of stakeholders. Participants included government officials, legal experts, civil society members, medical professionals, educators, students, social activists, and members of the LGBTQIA community.

Caroline Rowett, Deputy High Commissioner at the British Deputy High Commission, Chandigarh, delivered the keynote address, emphasising the UK Government’s unwavering commitment to creating societies where diversity is celebrated and everyone is guaranteed safety, opportunity, and respect.

“This conference is a platform for meaningful engagement, learning, and collective action. Together, we can chart pathways towards a society where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feels safe, valued, and respected,” Rowett stated.

Special guests included Shipra Bansal, Chairperson of the Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CCPCR), and Rakesh Popli, PCS officer, who shared their perspectives and engaged in discussions with participants.

The roundtable facilitated dialogue among LGBTQIA rights activists, community members, scholars, and advocates. Attendees shared experiences and innovative ideas to address challenges in fostering inclusivity and advancing LGBTQIA rights.

The conference underscored the need for collective action, collaboration, and a sustained commitment to building a society where equity and inclusivity are not just ideals but realities for all.
