PTC News Desk: Amid a surge in hoax bomb threats targeting Indian airlines, officials from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) convened a meeting with airline representatives at their headquarters in Delhi to address the escalating issue. This comes as nearly 70 flights have received bomb threats over the past several days, causing widespread disruption.

Airlines discuss impact of hoax bomb threats

During the meeting, airline representatives outlined the operational challenges they are facing due to the wave of hoax bomb threats. These threats have forced multiple flights to be diverted or delayed, with some airlines having to re-screen all passengers, leading to significant inconvenience and financial losses.

The representatives also raised concerns about heightened security during the festive season, which could result in further congestion at airports. The meeting was chaired by BCAS Director General Zulfiqar Hasan, who emphasized the importance of adhering strictly to safety and security guidelines to minimize risks.

BCAS officials reassured airlines that they are working closely with law enforcement agencies to identify the root cause behind the spate of hoax threats. Hasan stressed that Indian airspace remains safe and that current safety protocols are being rigorously enforced. He urged passengers to fly without fear, noting, “Indian skies are absolutely safe. The current protocol to deal with such threats is robust and is being strictly followed.”

Financial impact and government response

The hoax bomb threats have had a significant financial impact on the airline industry, with losses estimated to run into crores of rupees. The disruptions have caused delays, passenger inconvenience, and heightened security measures that have added to operational costs.

In response to the threats, the Union government is considering increasing the deployment of air marshals on flights to enhance security. Investigation agencies are also examining whether a pattern can be identified in the bomb threats, which could help prevent future occurrences.

Earlier this week, Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu confirmed that law enforcement agencies are actively investigating all cases of bomb threats and that the government is closely monitoring the situation. The authorities are determined to ensure the safety of passengers while minimising the disruption caused by these hoax threats.
