After 30 years and 15 judges, UP assault case concludes with Rs 2,000 fine
In the Banda district of Uttar Pradesh, an assault case came to a close after a thirty-year court struggle, with the offender receiving a fine of just Rs 2,000 from the local court.
PTC News Desk: In an assault case that has been lingering for the last thirty years, a court in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, has rendered its decision. The local community is shocked by the court's decision, nevertheless, as it only fined each of the three defendants Rs 2,000.
This 1994 incident resulted in a three-decade legal fight that included hundreds of court appearances and the replacement of over fifteen judges. Fascinatingly, the third accused passed away during the court, and the two accused who were booked when they were teenagers have since aged considerably.
The case started in the Kamasin police station area in Banda, where three members of the same village attacked Ramroop Sharma, the victim. The accused, who were well-known for their heavy drinking, battered and kidnapped Ramroop, inflicting injuries to his stomach and other bodily parts.
Ramroop was beaten by the accused, who also wanted money. The victim reported the occurrence to the police station, and after that, the case was registered under Sections 323, 504, 506, and 342 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The absence of witnesses caused the case to stay open after the police launched an investigation and filed a chargesheet. The case went to trial once the witnesses eventually provided testimony.

On June 13, the case's final decision was rendered. The court penalised two of the accused Rs 2,000 apiece after hearing arguments from both sides; the third culprit passed away during the legal proceedings.
The victim, who was forty-years-old when the tragedy occurred, is now older than seventy. In a similar vein, the accused, who were young at the time, are currently about 50-years-old.
The accused, according to the victim, are professional criminals who have been found guilty numerous times and will not be deterred by this light sentence.
The prosecution's witness, Chandraprakash Gautam, gave a detailed account of how the accused had beaten, threatened to kill, and held the victim captive.
