1989 batch IPS officer Nitin Agarwal named BSF Director General; know his salary & more

New Delhi, June 12: Centre has appointed Kerala IPS officer Nitin Agarwal as the Director General (DG) of the Border Security Force. The 1989 batch officer is currently serving as an Additional DG of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). 

"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs for the appointment of Shri Nitin Agarwal, IPS (KL:89), presently working as Additional DG, CRPF as Director General, Border Security Force (BSF) with pay at Level-16 of the Pay Matrix from the date of joining the post and up to 31.07.2026 i.e. date of his superannuation or till further orders whichever is earlier," notification issued by Home Ministry said.

Lying vacant for five months after the retirement of Pankaj Kumar Singh in December 2022, Border Security Force (BSF) got its new chief on Sunday. 

BSF is the country's major security agency, primarily entrusted with guarding the country's 4,096-kilometer-long international border with Pakistan and Bangladesh, as well as a number of internal security roles. 

The BSF employs around 2.65 lakh personnel in various capacities.

Kerala cadre's 1989-batch IPS officer Nitin Agarwal is currently posted as the Additional Director General of Operations at the CRPF.

While working with the ITBP, he was elevated to the rank of ADG in 2014. Agarwal received his B-Tech (1983-1987) and M. Tech (1987-1989) degrees from IIT Delhi, according to his LinkedIn profile. He has held positions such as IG Training at ITBP, IG Sashastra Seema Bal, and ADG-Police with Kerala Police. During his early career, he also worked as an Assistant Engineer for the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers.

Since Agarwal has been promoted to Level-16 of the Pay Matrix in accordance with the new order, he is expected to earn a higher salary in his new role. The salary range for Level 16 in the 7th Pay Commission Pay Matrix is Rs 2,05,400 to Rs 2,24,400.

This is in addition to the perks and allowances he will earn in his new role. Officers above pay matrix 14 are entitled to an official vehicle or can receive Transport Allowance at a rate of Rs 15,750 plus DA per month, according to the 7th Pay Commission. In addition, the officers are entitled to a Government Bungalow with the necessary security.
