Raksha Bandhan 2023: Tale of two celebrations on August 30 and 31
The root of this dual celebration lies in the alignment of Bhadra Kaal and full moon dates
Raksha Bandhan 2023: As the much-awaited festival of Raksha Bandhan is here, the cherished connection between siblings takes centre stage. Marked by the symbolic tying of the Rakhi, this occasion traditionally falls on the Poornima Tithi, the full moon day, of the Shravan Maas, or Sawan month. However, this year presents a unique situation that has sparked confusion and discussions about whether Raksha Bandhan 2023 should be observed on August 30 or 31, or perhaps even on both days.
Astrological factors
The root of this dual celebration lies in the alignment of Bhadra Kaal and the full moon dates. As per the Drik Panchang, the Poornima Tithi commences at 10:58 am on August 30, extending until 7:05 am on August 31. Concurrently, the Bhadra Poonch period is scheduled from 5:30 pm to 6:31 pm, with Bhadra Mukha spanning from 6:31 pm to 8:11 pm. The conclusion of Bhadra Kaal is set at 9:01 pm.
Religious traditions place significance on the Shravan Purnima date and the afternoon period as the most propitious time for performing the Raksha Bandhan rituals. However, engaging in positive activities during the Bhadra phase is traditionally considered inauspicious.
Given the overlap of Bhadra time with both the Poornima Tithi and the afternoon hours, individuals are confronted with uncertainty regarding the optimal timing for these rituals. Consequently, the recommended time for Rakhi tying emerges after 9:01 pm. It is worth noting that some consider nighttime unsuitable for these ceremonies, prompting choices between the evening of August 30 (post 9:01 pm) or the daytime of August 31.
