Hindi Diwas 2024: Hindi holds a special place in the hearts of millions of people as it is the cornerstone of India’s cultural and linguistic identity. It is a language that is both culturally and historically significant, as well as a unifying force for India's diverse population.
On September 14, we celebrate Hindi Diwas, which commemorates the decision to make Hindi one of the nation's official languages.
History
In 1918, a group of Hindi intellectuals and activists founded the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan (Hindi Literary Conference) to promote Hindi as a national language. The Sammelan played an important role in the acceptance of Hindi as India's official language. On September 14, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India declared Hindi, written in Devanagari script, to be the official language.
This decision was made to promote Hindi as India's lingua franca while also uniting the country's different linguistic and cultural regions. The first Hindi Diwas was held in 1953.
Hindi Diwas, also known as National Hindi Day, is an annual celebration that commemorates Hindi's recognition as one of India's official languages.
While the Indian Constitution does not designate a national language, Article 343 states that Hindi in Devanagari script is the official language of the central government and the Union.
Celebrations and Significance
Hindi Diwas aims to create awareness about the language while also commemorating its adoption as one of India's official languages.
The adoption of Hindi as an official language was intended to facilitate administration in a country with diverse languages. Several writers, poets, and campaigners advocated for the inclusion of Hindi.
Hindi Diwas is celebrated with great excitement across India, particularly in schools, colleges, and government offices. The celebrations include literary and cultural events that highlight Hindi literature and art.
Poetry recitations, essay writing, and debate competitions, as well as workshops and seminars, are all held to develop Hindi language skills. Additionally, individuals and organizations are recognized for their contributions to Hindi.
