Chandigarh, Punjab wake up to 'night-like' morning; rain, thunderstorm hit UT, state

Chandigarh and many parts of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh witnessed strong winds accompanied by heavy sharp rain, thunderstorm and hailstorm on Sunday morning. Meanwhile, the residents of Chandigarh and Mohali among some areas of Punjab woke up to a 'night-like' morning as the dark clouds surfaced around the cities at around 7:45 am. Likewise, Chandigarh also witnessed lightning flashes and roaring thunders. As a result, the mercury level dipped to around 31° C in Chandigarh on Sunday. The weather department has predicted rain from Sunday onwards with the possibility of gusty winds, thunder and lightning. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials had stated that "A Western Disturbance will cover the region with the intensity of rain likely to be maximum between Sunday night and Monday morning. This will decrease on Tuesday and chances of light rain will continue in isolated places in Punjab and Haryana thereafter." Reportedly, the rain was likely to go up till 30mm, while the high-velocity winds were predicted up to 40km per hour with thunder and lightning also expected, they had said.
