Two lawmakers in the United States have jointly introduced a bill that seeks to increase the number of green cards issued every year. Also, the bill seeks to make changes in the current immigration policy. If it falls through, it would be great for Indian techies working in the US on an H-1B visa. Incidentally, the S386 immigration bill, which seeks to usher in a liberalized green card regime, is set for a vote in the US Senate on Thursday night as per India time. As per the leading business daily, Democratic Party senators Dick Durbin and Patrick Leahy introduced the Resolving Extended Limbo for Immigrant Employees and Families (RELIEF) Act on Wednesday. The bill seeks to eliminate the backlog in family and employment green cards between 10 and 150 years, say green card lawyers. If the bill is passed, Indian nationals will be among the biggest beneficiaries. The bill states that almost four million people are on the state department’s immigrant visa waiting list, in addition to hundreds of thousands of immigrants in the United States awaiting green cards. Currently, only 2,26,000 family green cards and 1,40,000 employment green cards are issued every year. -PTC News
