Yearender 2024: As 2024 draws to a close, the entertainment industry reflects on a year filled with cinematic achievements and controversies. While several films captivated audiences, others faced legal battles and public backlash. Among the most contentious releases were 'The Sabarmati Report', 'Maharaj', 'Hum Do Hamare Baarah', and 'Kalki 2898 AD', each embroiled in allegations ranging from hurting religious sentiments to stirring political debates.

'The Sabarmati Report'

Produced by Ekta Kapoor and directed by Dheeraj Sarna, 'The Sabarmati Report' released on November 15, revisiting the 2002 Gujarat Godhra incident, where 59 passengers, predominantly 'kar sewaks' returning from Ayodhya, lost their lives in the Sabarmati Express fire. Starring Vikrant Massey, Rashi Khanna, and Ridhi Dogra, the film sparked nationwide debates on communal harmony. Despite facing opposition, it was declared tax-free in states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

'Maharaj'

Junaid Khan, son of Aamir Khan, made his acting debut with 'Maharaj', a film based on Saurabh Shah’s novel. Produced by YRF Entertainment, the movie faced allegations of hurting Hindu sentiments, with claims that it could incite violence. Following a petition filed by a Hindu group, the Gujarat High Court temporarily halted its release. Despite controversies, the film premiered on Netflix on June 21, featuring Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey, and Sharvari Wagh in pivotal roles.

'Hum Do Hamare Baarah'

Directed by Kamal Chandra, 'Hum Do Hamare Baarah' tackled the issue of population control but courted controversy for allegedly targeting the Muslim community. Initially barred from release by the Supreme Court on June 13, the Bombay High Court later lifted the ban, allowing its release on June 21. The film starred Annu Kapoor, Ashwini Kalsekar, and Parth Samthaan, among others.

'Kalki 2898 AD'

Featuring an ensemble cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas, and Deepika Padukone, 'Kalki 2898 AD' faced legal challenges from religious leaders. Acharya Pramod Krishnam of Uttar Pradesh's Kalki Peeth accused the filmmakers of distorting religious facts and served notices to the cast and crew.

Despite the controversies, these films sparked discussions on critical issues, showcasing the power of cinema as a medium of social commentary.
