Mithun Chakraborty to get Dadasaheb Phalke Award for outstanding contribution to Indian cinema

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw makes the announcement on X

PTC News Desk: Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty, renowned for his iconic roles in films such as Mrigayaa, Surakshaa, Disco Dancer, and Dance Dance, has been honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest accolade in Indian cinema. The announcement was made on Monday by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, via a post on X (formerly Twitter).


In his announcement, Vaishnaw expressed, “Mithun Da's remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! I am honored to share that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.”

The award will be conferred upon Chakraborty during the 70th National Film Awards ceremony scheduled for October 8.


Mithun Chakraborty, 74, began his illustrious acting career with Mrigayaa, directed by the esteemed filmmaker Mrinal Sen, in 1976. His performance in this film earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, marking the beginning of a successful journey in the film industry. Over the years, he has captivated audiences with memorable performances in various films, including Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki and Commando.

Chakraborty’s contributions to Indian cinema have not only made him a beloved figure but also an inspiration for aspiring actors and filmmakers across generations.
