Diljit Dosanjh breaks silence on 'Panjab vs Punjab' controversy; Guru Randhawa pens cryptic note

PTC Web Desk: Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh has finally addressed the uproar surrounding his use of the word "Panjab" instead of "Punjab" in one of his tweets. Taking to his X handle, the singer dismissed claims of conspiracy and criticised netizens for overanalysing his tweet, which also lacked a tricolour emoticon, further fueling the controversy.

In his response, Diljit Dosanjh wrote the word 'Punjab' in Punjabi script and said, "If the tricolour is missed once while mentioning Punjab in a tweet, it’s called a conspiracy. Even in a tweet about Bengaluru, it was missed once. If Punjab is written as Panjab, it’s called a conspiracy. Whether you write it as Panjab or Punjab...it will always remain ????? (sic)."

The controversy began after Diljit Dosanjh announced his Chandigarh concert with the spelling "Panjab," a version netizens associated with the Pakistani side of the region. Adding to the backlash, he did not use the tricolour emoji in the post, which sparked accusations of insensitivity.

However, Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh has hit back at critics questioning his patriotism and intent after his tweet referring to Punjab as "Panjab" sparked controversy. Diljit further also explained the meaning behind the word "Panjab," referring to its origin from “Panj Aab” or “five rivers,” and criticized those nitpicking over English spellings. "Well done to those crying conspiracy over spellings in the Goras’ language (English) In the future, I’ll write only in Punjabi: ਪੰਜਾਬ," he added.

In a sarcastic tone, he addressed his detractors: “How many times must we prove that We LOVE INDIA? Find something new to talk about, or is this your only task?”

The controversy began after Diljit announced his Chandigarh concert with the spelling "Panjab," which some associated with the Pakistani region. Adding fuel to the fire, his tweet lacked the tricolour emoji, leading to a wave of online criticism.

Despite the uproar, Diljit remains unfazed, choosing to celebrate Punjabi culture unapologetically. As his Dil-Luminati India tour continues, the singer has urged his fans and critics alike to focus on more meaningful conversations.

Renowned singer Guru Randhawa also drew attention amidst the row when he posted a cryptic message on his X handle, writing "PUNJAB" along with a tricolour emoticon. While many assumed it was a dig at Diljit, Randhawa did not clarify the intention behind his post.

The controversy comes as Diljit approaches the final leg of his Dil-Luminati India tour, which has faced its fair share of challenges. His Mumbai concert is scheduled for December 19, and the tour will conclude with a grand finale in Guwahati on December 29.
