'Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani': Akshay Kumar gets Indian citizenship on Independence Day
Akshay Kumar gets Indian citizenship: Actor Akshay Kumar, who faced criticism for his Canadian citizenship, has been granted Indian citizenship on the country's 77th Independence Day.
"Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!," Akshay Kumar said on X and shared the registration document.
Akshay Kumar has stated that he felt disappointed when people called his "love for the country" into doubt.
"India is everything to me... Whatever I have earned, whatever I have gained is from here. And I'm fortunate that I get a chance to give back. You feel bad when people say things without knowing anything...," the actor had said in an interview with news channel.
He filed for Indian citizenship in 2019, however, the procedure was stalled owing to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Following an interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kumar's Canadian citizenship became a point of debate.
"I never thought I'd have to change my passport, but now I have, and once I get the renounced status from Canada..." he explained.
On the work front, Akshay Kumar's "OMG" 2, which also stars Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam, was released in theatres last week.
